The Smithfield Town Council discussed plans to upgrade the Georgiaville Pond dam which could make it easier to control water flow there during a Tuesday night work session.
The upgrade, which has yet to go to bid, will likely be started during the annual draw-down of Georgiaville Pond and be complete by April, said Smithfield Town Manager Dennis Finlay. If the dam is upgraded, Finlay said, the drawdown, a source of concern for some residents, will definitely have to happen.
According to a report from the Valley Breeze, the Town Council has approved $57,400 for upgrading the dam at the pond. Finlay said the exact amount for the job won't be known until bidders have a chance to look at the dam, submit their proposals, and get reviewed by the Council. Finlay said the topic will likely be addressed by the Council again sometime in November.
One benefit to the upgrade: "It should be a better control device with the new equipment," Finlay said.
Finlay said the Council also discussed creating a management plan for Georgiaville Pond. No votes were taken, since the meeting was a work session.
