Finally Friday Five: Heat Wave, National Night Out, Yoga Tomorrow

Feelin' hot, hot, hot - "It ain't the heat; it's the humility.” - Yogi Berra. The state-wide heat wave continues today, with an estimated heat index around 102 degrees - that's what it feels like with humidity factored in today. Add another 15 degrees if you're directly in the sun. Not to worry - the Smithfield EMA has opened the senior center and the ice rink as cooling centers, and they've got fans to loan out, too. Call them at (401) 640-2923.

National Night Out -
It's that time of year again! It's the National Night Out hosted by the Smithfield Police Department. Join the SPD Aug. 6 at the gazebo for a day full of education, prizes and food. See the attached flyer.

Give Blood - On Monday, July 22 Rhode Island Blood Center Bloodmobile will be at Bryant University, 1150 Douglas Pike, from 9:30am to 12:30pm. No appointment necessary.

Yoga in the Park - Don't forget to join Smithfield YMCA for Yoga in the Park on Tuesdays at 7:00 AM or Saturdays at 8:00 AM with Certified Instructor Renee Maxwell! Call (401) 949-2480 to register.

Da bahrs -
Since our July 2 story on a bear sighted in Smithfield recently, later spotted in Exeter, another bear was sited July 5 in Burrillville on Emerson Road and Hill Road. It was last seen heading north through the woods parallel to Hill Road. Bears are attracted to trash cans, grills and bird feeders. If sited, Smithfield Police advise to not panic or approach the bear. If the bear is in your yard DEM advises he can probably be scared off by banging pots and pans.
