Mange Outbreak Among Foxes In Smithfield: Animal Control

Keep well away from wildlife to keep yourself and your pets safe, and never feed wild animals.

SMITHFIELD, RI — Sick foxes have been reported around Smithfield over the past week. The animals are suffering from mange, the town's Animal Control department said, a fairly common disease in wild animals.

Mange is a skin disease caused by a parasite, which leads to itchiness and patchy fur loss. Wide-spread infections can leave an animal susceptible to other illnesses, the department said.

It is illegal for anyone to trap or try to give medication to the animals, the department said, which includes Animal Control itself. Feeding animals is also strongly discouraged.
