The dog died of an apparent stroke, according to university President Ron Machtley.

SMITHFIELD, RI — Tupper, Bryant University's much loved mascot, died Wednesday night during the Festival of Lights celebration on campus. According to university President Ron Machtley, the dog died of an apparent stroke.

"It is my sad duty to inform our community that our beloved mascot, Ironclad Tupper I, passed away peacefully last night (Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017) following an apparent stroke," he wrote. "Tupper was our first official school mascot and wonderful symbol of grit and determination for our students. He was bright, friendly, and always willing to lend a paw when needed to cheer on our teams or welcome new students. He will be sorely missed."

The school will start looking for Tupper II, he said.
