Smithfield Church Fire Under Investigation

SMITHFIELD, RI—A fire broke out at the New Life Worship Center on Douglas Pike on Monday morning around 6:15 a.m. According to Capt. Michael Dexter, first crews on scene called a second alarm. The fire was in the main church, he said. The campus includes two buildings, and the second one, which is used for education, was not involved. Most of the damage occurred on the church's exterior. The fire was out fairly quickly, he said. The cause is still under investigation. He referred question to the state fire marshal's office.
