What's Your Take? North Korea Threatens Pre-Emptive Nuclear Strike On U.S.

North Korean officials are threatening a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States in response to an upcoming U.N. vote on whether to sanction the country.

In the latest in a string of threats from Pyongyang, an unidentified North Korean official warned the world that the country would launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes against the United States, reports the Associated Press (AP).

The threat comes just hours before the United Nations (U.N.) is set to vote on a new set of sanctions against the country, which has recently amped up threats of nuclear attacks.

If the sanctions are imposed, all countries would now be required to freeze financial transactions or activities that could contribute to North Korea's missile program.

North Korea has long been known for this type of inflammatory rhetoric. While the world acknowledges North Korea's possession of nuclear technology, the AP reports it likely does not have the ability to create warheads small enough to reach the U.S.

Since December, threats from the historically secretive nation have escalated, following a rocket launch and continued nuclear testing - in clear violation of U.N. resolutions barring the country from executing such programs.
