What's Open and Closed on Victory Day?

Rhode Island state offices and some businesses will be closed in observance of Victory Day today. Since the holiday is not federally recognized, federal organizations will remain open on Monday.

Rhode Island is the only state in the country to observe Victory Day. The holiday commemorates the surrender of Japan on Aug. 15, 1945, nine days after the United States dropped the world's first atom bomb on Hiroshima.

The holiday is not a recognized national holiday, so federal offices, including the U.S. Postal Service, will remain operational.

State and local government municipal offices–except for town beaches and essential emergency services—will be closed.
