WEST GREENWICH, RI β€” Number-one seeded Narragansett walked away with the summer’s biggest prize β€” literally.

The Mariners prevailed last Thursday in a three-game 7-on-7 touch football tournament hosted by Exeter-West Greenwich/Prout. The team laid claim to a massive trophy. In the final 25-minute passing league contest, Narragansett defeated Coventry 30-24 in triple overtime.

β€œIt was a highly competitive tournament,” said Cliff Fortin, head coach at EWG. β€œThis was the best 7-on-7 I have ever been part of. Every team came and played their hearts out.”

In the quarterfinal round, number-three West Warwick prevailed over sixth-seeded Coventry B, and the EWG A team beat EWG B. Narragansett then defeated the EWG/Prout A team 18-12 in the semifinals, and moved on to face Coventry after the Oakers beat the Wizards in game two.

The end-of-summer touch football tournament has become a tradition under Fortin, and he says that other teams have reached out and want to participate next year.

β€œBeing able to play something like this really helps out our teams,” said Fortin."As a coach, watching the players improve week-by-week was amazing. I love to see the players compete, I love seeing good matchups, and the sportsmanship between each team was amazing in itself."

Fortin and other coaches have been holding summer training camps for football recruits who are hoping to gain a competitive edge ahead of the first autumn kickoff.

β€œI’m excited for the upcoming season,” said Fortin. β€œI’m looking forward to passing out equipment on August 21. On August 23 we start mandatory practices. I can’t wait to see how our players compete.”

Fortin thanked Coventry head coach Gary Goodheart, West Warwick head coach We Pennington, Narragansett head coach Matt Blessing, and all of their players and staff.

β€œThank you for coming out and making this a great 7-on-7,” Fortin said. β€œGood luck for the upcoming season!”
