Arc's Finishing Touches Going Up in Monument Square

Signs and decorated fabric walls are coming this week for the Parisian Arc de Triomphe replica in Monument Square — and some of it is already up.

The top of the now-complete scaffolding now sports the city's name across the top, and numerals 1, 2 and 5 are lying on the ground nearby the structure.

N. Main and Social Street light poles are also now festooned with banners sporting the names of local businesses that have supported the $70,000 Woonsocket 125th Birthday Block Party.

Billed as the largest Block Party on the East Coast, the city's 125th birthday celebration Thursday from 4 to 11 p.m. will stretch a half-mile from Monument Square to Market Square, packed with 10 acts on each of 12 stages, and 28 performances altogether. The arc will be the celebration's centerpiece.

Fabric walls bearing images of Woonsocket's triumphs will be draped across the edifice in time for the party.
