Woonsocket Launches New Mattress Recycling Program

Drop off used mattresses for free in Woonsocket, pay to get them picked up curbside, or, drive a ways and get paid $2 for each one.

WOONSOCKET—There’s no reason for unsightly mattresses growing mold anywhere in city limits thanks to a new mattress recycling program available to Woonsocket residents.

The new program gives residents the chance to drop off a mattress for free, or even get a payment for the old mattress.

Here’s how it works:

Beginning May 1, retailers and other businesses that sell mattresses in Rhode Island have started to collect a recycling free during sales.

That fee goes to the Mattress Recycling Council, a nonprofit that transports and recycles used mattresses.

Only Rhode Island residents can take advantage of the program and they must be “in reasonable condition and must be dry and free of contamination,” according to a city news release.

Sofa bed mattresses, sleeping bags, loose bedding, juvenile size bedding, futons and water beds can’t be dropped off.

You can drop off a qualify mattress at no charge at the Woonsocket Recycle Facility at 943 River Street Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. You must show ID proving Woonsocket residency.

Curbside pickup is available for a fee. Call 1-800-972-4545 to speak with someone at Waste Management.

To get paid ($2 per piece) drive to one of the two city-approved recyclers directly.

·         Express Mattress Recyclers, 310 Bourne Ave., Rumford401-383-8400.

“Mattresses are difficult to dispose of.  This is another option now available to all Woonsocket residents.  Please utilize this program and help keep our City clean,” said Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt.
