Here are the top three stories today in Charleston:

  1. On Sunday evening, a car crash in the Avondale neighborhood left one person dead and three more injured. The incident occurred when a pedestrian was hit by a southbound vehicle while crossing Savannah Highway near Magnolia Road, causing the vehicle to hit a tree and overturn. The pedestrian was announced dead at the scene. Although no charges have been filed, the Charleston Police Department is still investigating the crash. (ABC NEWS 4)
  2. Lowcountry animal adoption centers are offering rewards of $1,000 each for information leading to the arrest of two people caught on camera abusing a cat on a porch in the Plantation Ridge Community. The Pet Helpers Adoption Center and LowCountry Animal Rescue are both offering the reward for information on the culprits. The video (trigger warning), which has been circulating on Facebook, shows one suspect slamming the cat onto the concrete ground and the pair allegedly laughing afterward. (Live 5 News WCSC)
  3. Last weekend's Southeastern Wildlife Expedition will impact Charleston's local businesses and restaurants downtown for weeks following the event. Annually, the event draws around 40,000 visitors to the city and typically contributes $50 to $60 million to the Charleston economy. Although exact figures for this year are not yet available, officials estimate that it set a new record. The influx of visitors with disposable income resulted in a significant boost to the local restaurant industry; one owner said his profits were up 40 percent compared to the weekend prior.
