Charleston Officer Recovering After Shooting

A Charleston police officer and a suspect are recovering today from a late Saturday gunfight in West Ashley, according to police.

Both the suspect and officer suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but both individuals were reportedly stable and recovering in the hours after the incident, according to police spokesman Charles Francis.

The shooting began as a traffic stop at Interstate 526 at Savannah Highway, but when the officer began chasing the suspect on foot, a gunfight erupted.
Overnight officers kept the intersection closed as the investigation continued. Police said the closure would continue at least through the early daylight hours. The closure will impact morning traffic, police said.

Police have not released the names of the suspect or the officer, but both are reportedly in stable condition. The officer is said to be talking with colleagues and his family, according to Francis.
