County Council Moving Ahead with Ashley River Bridge Bike Lane
The Charleston County Council approved plans to add a bicycle lane to the Ashley River Bridge heading into downtown on Tuesday

For the second time in as many weeks a majority of Charleston County Council approved moving ahead with plans to add a bicycle lane to one of the Ashley River Bridges.
The Council initially approved the plan at its previous meeting in May, but revisited the issue on Tuesday, Live5News reports. Under the plan one lane of car traffic on the T. Allen Legare Bridge heading into Downtown will be converted to a bike lane over the next 12-18 months, with the intent of tying that lane into the existing bike lane on St. Andrews Boulevard, which was completed in February 2012.
SCDOT has also already approved the bike lane plan, and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley has been a big proponent of the project and adding bike lanes elsewhere in the city.

The Council also decided to pay for the project now with bond funds, to be repaid with money collected through the half-cent transportation sales tax, according to Live5News.
