Here are the top three stories today in Charleston:

  1. A new facility is coming to North Charleston's old U.S. Navy base. The South Carolina Ports Authority broke ground recently on the $400 million railyard and the board approved contracts on Tuesday for the design and build of the facility. About 15 miles of rail will run south from the facility toward Charleston, and back, to handle cargo from Norfolk Southern and CSX. (Live 5 News WCSC)
  2. A new candidate has entered the 2023 Charleston mayoral race. Local organizer and justice advocate Tamika "Mika" Gadsen recently announced her mayor campaign. (WTMA)
  3. Mary L. Smith Taylor, a Charleston resident, celebrated her 100th birthday yesterday. A mother to 10, Taylor has been a member of Shiloh A.M.E. Church for more than 50 years. Her family said she loves to cook, especially macaroni and cheese, homemade biscuits, and cornbread. (Live 5 News WCSC)
