Here are the top three stories in Charleston today:

  1. The bridge replacement project along the West Ashley Greenway began yesterday, Jan. 23. The existing wooden bridge that spans over Long Creek, between Arlington Drive and Parkdale Drive, will be replaced by an eight-foot-wide aluminum bridge. Construction is expected to take two months and a detour route is available. (ABC NEWS 4)
  2. Yesterday, Jan. 23, early voting began for a District 6 seat on the Charleston County School Board of Trustees. Former board member Erica Cokley declined to accept the position, leaving the seat vacant. Voters will choose between Daron Lee Calhoun, Lee Runyon, or Theresa Griffith in the special election. Voting will continue through Friday, Feb. 3. (WCBD News 2)
  3. Da Toscano Porchetta Shop, a "whole hog" sandwich shop, is replacing Gnome Café, a vegan café, in downtown Charleston. Da Toscano Porchetta Shop is expected to open this spring in the 109 President Street space previously occupied by the vegan café. The new shop specializes in Italian focaccia sandwiches, rotisserie, and espresso. (Subscription: Charleston Post Courier)

  • Palmetto Carriage Works, a local horse-drawn carriage company, will host its annual "Locals Ride Free" day on Jan. 29! To show appreciation for the community, the company will offer free rides to Charleston-area residents. (WCBD News 2)
  • In honor of Black History Month, EO Charleston, the Lowcountry’s local chapter of Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), will host its Celebrating Charleston’s Black Entrepreneurs event on Feb. 9. The special event serves to empower and celebrate Black business leaders across the Charleston metro. From 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at The Wonderer. (ABC NEWS 4)
