Colbert Busch Receives Two Key Endorsements in SC1 Race

Charleston Mayor and AFL-CIO will support her candidacy.

Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the leading candidate to receive the Democratic nomination for the First Congressional Seat, received two endorsements on Thursday. One of the largest labor unions in the district, the AFL-CIO, and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, announced they would support Colbert Busch.

“Elizabeth’s business experience with the maritime industry and Clemson University helps her understand that when labor and management work together everyone wins. Her struggles in life have given her compassion and an understanding of working people's struggles,” said Vice-President of the SC AFL-CIO, Erin McKee. “Her experience helps her to understand the needs of the 1st Congressional district.”

“I am enormously grateful for their backing,” she said. “I am especially pleased that I received this endorsement as a result of the work I have done helping to create thousands of jobs, and my ability to negotiate to create win-win situations.”

At a press conference, Riley said: “She will bring energy and a work ethic that every citizen can respect and admire," according to a press release from the campaign.

Riley also described her as a “tireless worker, a self-made woman in a field where there were few women …It’s been too long since South Carolina has had a woman in its Congressional delegation. Now is the time and this is the person.”
