Columbia Council Denies Request to Delay Vote on Bull Street Plan

Columbia City Council voted against a motion to delay action on the development agreement for the proposed Bull Street project.

Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine suggested council move forward with the public hearing but delay action on the agreement until July 23.

Devine said she still wanted to hear from the public and thought council needed to take some more time on the agreement before voting.

Council members Leona Plaugh and Moe Baddourah both agreed council should defer the vote.

Mayor Steve Benjamin disagreed saying it was clear to him that the city would have a significantly misses opportunity if they didn't move forward.

"This deal will die today if we don't move forward," Benjamin said.

Plaugh, Baddourah and Devine have said they're not against the plan and want to see the area redeveloped.

The majority of council thought otherwise and voted 4-3 against delaying action on the agreement.

Council continues hearing from public. about 60 people have signed up to speak in the standing-room-only Earlewood Community Center.

Devine said she had to leave the hearing early due to a prior engagement and will not vote on the agreement.
