Columbia Police Charge Suspect in Officer-Involved Shooting

A man accused of assaulting a Columbia Police officer has been charged.
Michael Haywood, 40, is facing charges of assault on police while resisting arrest and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
An officer was responding to a call of a fight near Woodridge Drive in Columbia.
Police say the officer was hit in the head by Haywood as he tried to break up the fight.
Haywood was shot in the lower body after several attempts to subdue him was unsuccessful, according to the police department.
Both the officer and the suspect were transported to a local hospital. Haywood is still receiving treatment at a local hospital, police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.
Once released, he will be transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
