Coroner Identifies Teen, 16, Killed in I-20 Wreck

A 16-year-old was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 Saturday afternoon.

A 16-year-old killed in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 Saturday has been identified by the Lexington County Coroner's Office.

Matthew Lawrence Johnson of Columbia was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle that crashed around 2:30 p.m. Saturday on I-20 near mile marker 38.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the right rear tire of the SUV blew out, causing the driver, identified as 38-year-old Lashonda Woods of Columbia, to lose control.

Senior Trooper Bridget Wyatt said when the SUV ran off the right side of the road, the driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to flip several times. 

Woods along with six passengers were transported to Palmetto Health Richland. Their conditions are unknown.

Authorities have not said if Johnson was wearing a seatbelt.

The accident remains under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
