Lillian McBride Resigns, 'Accepts Full Responsbility'

Embattled elections head had been asked to resign.

After nearly two months of controversy, Lillian McBride, the embattled head of Richland County Elections and Voter Registration has resigned. She will retain a position with the county in an as yet undetermined capacity.

Before the holidays, 11 of 16 members of the Richland County delegation called for McBride to be replaced. The day previous, the chair of the Richland County Election Commission . In Crum's absence, Vice-Chair Allen Dowdy was acting as Chair.

During a closed session just prior to the Christmas break, one of the members of the Richland County delegation said McBride had stepped down, but McBride quickly informed the media that was not the case.

During an investigation into the cause of lengthy lines on Election Day, it was determined by the Attorney General that only the Election Commission had the power to fire the McBride, who was paid approximately $89,000 per year.

Dr. Jasper Salmond has been named as McBride's acting replacement. He will not be a candidate to replace McBride on a full-time basis. He will be paid $4,500 per month.

Salmond is a former Chair of the Richland School District One Board of Commissioners.
