The city of Columbia dedicated a park area behind EdVenture Children's Museum Wednesday morning in honor of the city's former Mayor Bob Coble.
City and county leaders from both Richland and Lexington counties, members of the River Alliance and others met for the unveiling of the site marker and dedication plaque recognizing Coble's efforts to develop the greenways on both sides of the Congaree River.
Coble, who served as the city's mayor from 1990-2010, said the area will "be a great place for children" and everyone who visits.
Coble Plaza, which is part of the Three Rivers Greenway, includes an amphitheater and boardwalk and can hold about 3,000 people. Columbia City Council passed a resolution in 2010 to rename the area once called the Columbia Canal Front Terrace Building and Park to Coble Plaza.
The Three Rivers Greenway consists of several miles of pathways along where the Broad, Saluda and Congaree rivers meet.
The city has already scheduled its first event at the plaza. Riverfront Rollout — a free family-friendly event featuring music, food, entertainment and more — will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
