Report: Fire Causes $20K in Damages at Columbia Fire Headquarters

Columbia firefighters had to extinguish a fire in a familiar place this week — the kitchen of the department's headquarters.

According to a report from The State, a firefighter left an unattended pot of grease on a stove Monday night in a rush to respond to alarms caused by thunderstorms that evening.

All firefighters were away at the time of the fire, which was confined to the kitchen area.  The department's sprinkler system helped to keep the fire from spreading until crews returned, according to the report.
