Scott Biography

Few members in the history of the United States Senate have overcome the type of odds that Tim Scott did to reach that chamber.

Raised in a single-parent home in North Charleston, Scott struggled academically for most of high school. He credits local businessman John Moniz with taking him under his wing and providing him with the leadership and guidance he was missing at a young age. Scott eventually went to college and graduated from Charleston Southern with a degree in political science.

Soon after graduation, Scott started his own business and became a successful insurance agent. He ran for and won a seat on the Charleston County Council in 1995, where he remained until 2008. He ran for and won a seat to represent District 117 in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served there for one term before running for Congress in 2010. Scott was re-elected with ease in November 2012.

Shortly after Sen. Jim DeMint announced his resignation in December 2012, Scott became the frontrunner to replace him. On Dec. 17, Gov. Haley made Scott only the seventh African-American to serve in the Senate, the first from south of the Mason-Dixon line since the 1880s and the first ever from South Carolina.
