Clemson University’s Class of 1963 celebrated its golden anniversary by presenting a $744,000 gift to the university for its Bridge to Clemson program Friday on the bridge in front of R.M. Cooper Library. The class also presented a check of $6.6 million, representing the total amount class members have given since their graduation.
The anniversary gift will help meet the Bridge program’s funding needs. In honor of the gift, the program will be named the Class of 1963 Bridge to Clemson University. This gift is part of Clemson’s The Will to Lead capital campaign to raise $1 billion to support students and faculty with scholarships, professorships and improved facilities and technology.
“When the Class of ‘63 committee began to discuss our 50th anniversary gift to the university, Clemson trustee Joe Swann, who is in our class, suggested that we consider the Bridge to Clemson program that has a significant impact on students from the state,” said class leader Lewis Dorrity. “The direct impact on students was the driving point, and our class will be able to greatly enhance a fantastic program.”

The Bridge to Clemson University program is a distinctive academic-transfer program available by invitation only. Beginning with a strong first-year academic experience at Tri-County Technical College, the Bridge program includes dedicated academic advising, student support services and a student life component — all of which are designed to help students succeed in meeting Bridge academic requirements and transferring to Clemson.
“The class’ gift will strengthen students’ Bridge program experience and connection to Clemson through the enhanced programs and services we will be able to provide,” said Susan Whorton, director of the transfer and Bridge to Clemson programs.
