Clemson University Air Force ROTC Receives Outstanding Unit Award

Clemson University’s Air Force ROTC unit has been named the South Carolina Air Force Association’s (AFA) Outstanding Unit of the Year for the third year in a row. The unit has received this award four of the past five years.

Nicknamed the Flyin’ Tigers, Clemson’s Air Force ROTC unit is one of the nation’s top-rated medium-sized Air Force ROTC detachments in the Southeast. Created in 1947, the detachment came into existence when Clemson still was a military school. It has continued to excel throughout the years, receiving numerous awards.

“We are honored to be chosen from among the other excellent Air Force ROTC programs in South Carolina as the Outstanding AFROTC winner this year,” said its commander, Col. Greg Riemens-Van Laare. “I’m extremely proud of our cadets and their dedication to Clemson University, Air Force ROTC and the local community — they are second to none.”

The award was presented to the Clemson cadets at the Annual South Carolina AFA Convention held in Anderson.

The AFA is a non-profit independent military and aerospace education association with the goal of promoting the importance of aerospace power in national safety and security.
