Museum Announces Four New Art Classes

The Pickens County Museum is pleased to announce registration is now open for this exciting new art class. Art Instructor, Jo Johnston, worked as commercial artist for 30 years. A graduate of Orangeburg-Calhoun Tech, she has also taught drawing, watercolor, and acrylic painting at Johnston County Community Technical College.

Basic Drawing from Nature’s Treasures - Part 1. Six Weekly Sessions on Tuesdays Aug. 27, Sept, 3, 10, 17, 24 & Oct. 1 from 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon: All you need is a sketchpad, some pencils, charcoal and a few accessories to begin your drawing adventure. We’ll use simple items found in nature to practice a variety of exercises designed to develop the critical observation skills necessary for drawing any subject well. Drawing is the important first step whether you are planning to paint in watercolor, oil, or acrylics—or draw just for the fun of it! A supplies list will be furnished at the first class. Tuition for this class is only $88 ($78 for museum members). A minimum number of five and a maximum of eight students will be accepted into this class.

Basic Drawing from Nature’s Treasures - Part 2. Six Weekly Sessions on Tuesdays Oct. 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12 & 19 from 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon: Expand your newly acquired drawing skills with this next class. We will review some exercises and add new ones to encourage your drawing practice. Use supplies from Part 1 and add pen/ink for more creativity. This is a helpful follow-up to Part 1 you don’t want to miss! Tuition for this class is only $88 ($78 for museum members). A minimum number of five and a maximum of eight students will be accepted into this class.

Sketch Now, Finish Later - Part 1. Six Weekly Sessions on Thursdays Aug. 29, Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26 & Oct. 3 from 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon: This class is designed to help you increase your painting skills as you use your sketchbook to explore new compositions in pen and watercolor. You will review drawing exercises, create color charts, and use problem solving to build your confidence in planning a finished painting. Participation in previous sketchbook classes is required. Some new supplies may be suggested but not required. Tuition for this class is only $88 ($78 for museum members). A minimum number of five and a maximum of eight students will be accepted into this class.

Sketch Now, Finish Later - Part 2. Six Weekly Sessions on Thursdays Oct. 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7, 14 & 21 from 10:00 am to 12:00 Noon: This follow-up class will focus on putting the exercises from Part 1 into practice. You will be encouraged to plan and create paintings from the ideas available in your unique sketchbook.  You may choose to work in pencil, pen/ink, watercolor or mixed media. Add to or replenish supplies as needed. Suggestions will be offered. Tuition for this class is only $88 ($78 for museum members). A minimum number of five and a maximum of eight students will be accepted into this class.

You may register on-line at www.visitpickenscounty.com/calendar, in person, or by calling the Pickens County Museum at (864) 898-5963. Tuition may be paid by cash, check or charge.  Make check payable to the Pickens County Museum or call the Museum to use your Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express.  Classes will be held at the Pickens County Museum, 307 Johnson Street in Pickens. Each class is designed and offered on a Six week session basis only, no individual selected week(s) option will be offered. Students will be notified if a class is cancelled or filled. If class is cancelled all tuition will be reimbursed to registered student. No tuition will be reimbursed after start date of this class.

Located at the corner of Hwy. 178 at 307 Johnson Street in Pickens SC, the Pickens County Museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration for our Studio Art Classes is required.
