Pickens Soldier Dies From Injuries

A soldier from Pickens has died from injuries sustained while serving in Afghanistan. 

Barrett Austin, 20, died Sunday in an Army hospital in Germany, according to Fox Carolina. 

The U.S. Army Combat Engineer was injured earlier this month in an explosion. 

Austin's grandfather told Fox Carolina his vehicle ran over an explosive device.  

Supporters held a prayer vigil Thursday evening at the Easley salon owned by Austin's mother, after learning of his injuries. 

According to Facebook posts, Austin's wife Heather and his parents, Curtis and Yolanda Austin, were at Austin's side at the time of his death. 

The family is expected to return with Austin's remains Wednesday. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
