The bodies of Marshall Wayne Hendricks, 20, Mark Wayne Hendricks, 52, Matthew Wayne Hendricks, 23 and Linda Ann Burns, 64, were found in two Liberty residences on October 14, 2011.
Mark Wayne Hendricks was the father of Marshall and Matthew. Burns was Susan Hendricks' stepmother and the step-grandmother of Marshall and Matthew, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said.
On the morning of Friday, October 14, the Pickens County Sheriff's Office responded to a call on a possible suicide. When deputies arrived, Liberty Fire and Rescue was already on the scene, checking on the victims.
Evelyn Burns, Susan Hendricks' sister, met officers at the 236 Pinedale Road residence. She told officers her entire family was dead.
Deputies found the body on Matthew Hendricks in a bedroom of that residence. He had a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found on a nearby bedside table.
Linda Burns' body was found in the same residence. She'd been shot in the torso.
The bodies of Marshall and Mark Hendricks were then discovered at 304 Pinedale Road.
Both father and son died from gunshot wounds.
Susan Hendricks was arrested in November 2011 at a hotel in Easley.
At a press conference following her arrest, Solicitor Walt Wilkins III said Susan Hendricks killed her relatives in order to collect on life insurance policies placed on them.
He said Hendricks stood to gain a "significant amount of money" from the claims from the policies, but would not specify the exact amount.
Easley Patch reported that Hendricks squandered thousands of dollars from an inheritance after filing for bankruptcy.
Wilkins said that Hendricks was charged because of three main pieces of evidence: the insurance motive, she owned the weapon and inconsistencies in her story to police.
"Her statements were inconsistent with scientific and forensic evidence," Wilkins said.
