DEW: 300 Fewer People Employed in Berkeley County
Berkeley County unemployment rate higher than national average.

About 300 more people found themselves out of work in Berkeley County in August, according to S.C. Department of Employment Workforce.Â
The 300 newly jobless join the roughly 6,000 already out of work in the county.Â
Berkeley County's unemployment rate is at 7.4 percent, above the national average of 7.3 percent. Berkeley County saw a .4 percent increase in unemployment in August as more people enter the workforce and more found themselves out of work.
Since August 2012, the Charleston area has seen an increase of 4,500 jobs, equating to a 1.4 percent increase in employment.Â
In August, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.1 percent.Â
