Greenville County Schools Superintendent Burke Royster praised emergency response from the school and law enforcement. Students were sheltered in place and then led to safety at Brookwood Church in Simpsonville, he said. Parents and guardians will need identification to pick up their student at the church, according to the school.
The shooting will cause many school buses in the district to run behind schedule, according to Royster. A decision has not been made on whether the school will hold classes Friday.
An "aftercare team" of trauma-trained mental health specialists, school counselors and psychologists will be available for students to help them process the shooting, according to Royster.
"It's a senseless tragedy, and unfortunately, one that occurs all too often in today's society, when people resort to violence," Royster said. "It has a lasting impact on all those that are in proximity to it."
