Apply: Leaphart, Harbison West Magnet Applications Available

Students interested in joining magnet programs at Leaphart, Harbison West elementary schools should apply by Feb. 11.

Lexington-Richland 5's elementary magnet school application process is now open for programs at Leaphart and Harbison West elementary schools.

District 5 currently supports two elementary magnet programs, Leaphart Engineering Arts Program (LEAP) at Leaphart Elementary and Escolares Academy at Harbison West Elementary.  

Interested parents are encouraged to attend informational meetings for LEAP on Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at Leaphart Elementary and/or Escolares Academy on Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. at Harbison West.

The last day to apply is Feb. 11. Additional information as well as the application is available online on the district's website.

Leaphart Engineering Arts Program (LEAP) is a whole-school magnet program for students in kindergarten through 5thgrade that will use engineering as the tool that links science, mathematics, English language arts and social studies throughout the curriculum.  LEAP students attend Leaphart Elementary School fulltime.  Any district student who will be in kindergarten through 5th grade may apply to participate in LEAP.  Applications will be entered into a random lottery based on available space.  The number of slots available varies in each grade level.  If a child is not selected, the application will be kept in a waiting pool throughout the first month of school, should any opening become available.

Escolares Academy at Harbison West Elementary is a full-day magnet program for academically gifted students in second through fifth grades.  The program gives gifted students the opportunity to learn, grow and develop to their maximum potential.  Any district student, who will be in second through fifth grade and meets the gifted and talented program requirements mandated by the state of South Carolina, may participate in the program.  Applicants will be admitted in rank order based on their performance on a weighted profile that includes aptitude scores from a nationally normed aptitude test, as well as reading and math achievement scores from the most recent administration of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress.)  Space is limited in each grade level.
