Attorney for Chapin High Teacher Releases Statement

Scott Compton has been on administrative leave since December after he stomped on an American flag during three classroom lessons.

The attorney for Chapin High teacher Scott Compton said his client and his family have been harassed unfairly since word of him stomping on an American flag spread through the community, The State reports.

In a statement, attorney Darryl Smalls maintains Compton meant no disrespect to veterans and active duty service members when he stomped on the American flag during three classroom lessons in December.

Smalls said the intent of Compton's lesson on symbolism was to show students in his honors English classes that "his actions could not diminish the foundation that America was built on and has thrived on," according to the report.
