Civil Rights Activist, Leader the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth Dies at 89
Staunch supporter of human, civil rights died on Wednesday
Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a civil rights activist and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), died Wednesday in Birmingham, AL, according to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Shuttlesworth was 89.
Shuttlesworth was a leader in the fight against segregation, having participated in the organization of Freedom Rides against bus segregation and the march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.
He also was known for working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights leaders in organizing the SCLC.
