Update: Driver Charged in I-20 Wreck

Authorities charge 21-year-old in accident on Interstate 20.

Updated: A Greenville man has been charged after the vehicle he was driving ran off the right side of the road on Interstate 20 near West Columbia on Friday.

Pablo Palmeras, 21, was driving a full-size Chevrolet passenger van eastbound on I-20 when he fell asleep at the wheel, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. 

The vehicle traveled down an embankment and struck a tree.

The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, along with three other passengers were taken to a local hospital.

Their conditions are unknown. It is not known if the other three passengers were wearing a seat belt.

The driver is charged with driving too fast for condidtions and driving without a South Carolina driver's license, the highway patrol reports. 

Original story: Irmo and Lexington County fire units are on the scene of a possible vehicle entrapment down a ravine on Interstate 20 eastbound near exit 61.

Motorists are asked to used caution when driving near the area.

There have been reports of a second accident, according to the Irmo Fire District.
