Update: Columbia Temp Climbs to 109

Update, 5:15 p.m.: The temperature in Columbia has reached 109 degrees —breaking three high temperature records, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.

The temperature was registered at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport at 4:52 p.m.

Original: The temperature in Columbia reached a new all-time record high today — 108 degrees.

The record breaking temperature was recorded at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport around 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Columbia is known as a hot spot in the Southeast, and has taken the moniker "Famously Hot" as a marketing campaign. Today's weather just took it to another level.

The previous high temperature record for this day, set in 1936, was 103 degrees, weather officials said.

For the entire month of June, the high temperature was 107 degrees set on June 27, 1954. 

A high of 107 degrees was the all-time record on any day and month in Columbia. That temperature was set on July 23, 1952. 

A heat advisory is in effect for most of the state throughout the weekend. 

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will make it feel like its 110 to 113 degrees outside. 

If you have some type of breathing difficulty such as asthma, you could be impacted, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The general public will not notice the reduced air quality.

If you're going to be outdoors, drink plenty of water. Otherwise, stay in an air conditioned room and out of the sun. 

The public is also advised to never leave children or pets unattended in a car.
