Construction Projects Progressing at District 5 Schools

Construction projects are underway at Irmo High, Chapin High, Dutch Fork High and the new Spring Hill High.

School officials say construction projects at District Five schools are progressing well, despite persistent rainfall in recent weeks.

Crews were in the process of removing portable classrooms at Irmo High School this week as interior renovations provided new classroom space. Construction also was underway at Dutch Fork High where work on a new health science building and other facilities continued this summer.

The major renovation effort at Chapin High School is also taking shape. The new administrative space, guidance offices and media center were occupied this spring and work is progressing well on the instructional space.

Renovations to the existing three district high schools and the opening of Spring Hill High School this August will provide four excellent high school facilities for our community. The newly opened Center for Advanced Technical Studies provides another great facility for high school students.

“Of course the weather has hindered our efforts, but we anticipate that the projects will be completed on schedule," said Keith McAlister, District Five director of new design and construction  "At Irmo High, that means that there won’t be any student classes in the portable classrooms. These projects are very important for the safety, security and academic success of our students.”

Irmo High School had 13 portable classrooms. New principal David Riegel said construction projects at the school will bring a welcomed change.

“We’re looking forward to the completion of the projects at Irmo High School and how these new facilities will enhance student learning. From new classroom spaces to the construction of our new theatre and field house, it’s an exciting time to be an Irmo Yellow Jacket.”
