Deputy Injured in Shooting Recognized as Officer of the Year

Deputy Sheila Aull was named Officer of the Year for her efforts to protect the community.

A Richland County Sheriff's deputy who was injured in a shootout with a domestic violence suspect in February was recognized for her bravery Saturday.

Deputy Sheila Aull was named Officer of the Year by the South Carolina Chapter of the Forty & Eight, an honor society of American Legion veterans committed to charity.

Aull was shot in the chest on Feb. 26 while chasing 24-year-old Adam Jurgen, a suspect in a domestic violence incident. The bullet didn't make it past Aull's bullet-proof vest though.

Aull and several other deputies returned fire, and Jurgen died at the scene - an apartment complex off Broad River Road in the St. Andrews area.

The Forty & Eight presented Aull with the award during its Grande Promenade in Goose Creek.

"Deputy Sheila Aull is a hero," said Sheriff Leon Lott, "and exemplifies everything a police officer should strive to be — committed, professional and courageous in the face of danger."
