District 5 Agricultural Education Instructor to Be Featured on Statewide Radio Show

The show airs Monday on radio stations across the state, including 91.3 in Columbia.

Agricultural education programs can and should exist in rural, suburban and urban areas to remain relevant and successful, says Kevin Sox, Lexington-Richland School District Five agriculture instructor and president of the South Carolina Association of Agricultural Educators (SCAAE).

Sox discussed the future of agricultural education during a recent taping of the statewide radio show, "Your Day," which is scheduled for broadcast on the SC ETV Radio Network on Monday between 12 and 1 p.m.

The show is a radio magazine produced as a public service of Clemson University Radio Productions, providing programming in National Public Radio format. The broadcast with Sox precedes the 2013 SCAAE Summer Conference at Clemson University on July 24-25.

Sox says agriculture has evolved and there’s a need for highly-skilled, scientific-minded young professionals, including those not necessarily from traditional farming backgrounds.

“Our agricultural program at The Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center) is a great example of how a suburban program can be successful,” says Sox, who also serves as District Five’s FFA advisor. “We take students who have little exposure to production agriculture and teach them about the agribusiness industry, posing the question ‘how can agriculture be involved in the future need for fuel, food and fiber for a growing world population?’ This creates interest and ideas early on … and we’ll need students from rural, suburban and urban areas to come together to solve the agricultural challenges of tomorrow.”

The Your Day Radio Show can be heard statewide on several stations including: WRJA-FM (88.1) in Sumter, WNSC-FM (88.9) in Rock Hill, WLJK-FM (89.1) in Aiken, WJWJ-FM (89.9) in Beaufort, WHMC-FM (90.1) in Conway, WSCI-FM (89.3) in Charleston, WEPR-FM (90.1) in Greenville; and WLTR-FM (91.3) in Columbia. The broadcast will also be heard in parts of North Carolina and Georgia.
