District 5 Announces New Social Studies Coordinator
Melony Sanford, a social studies teacher at Columbia High School, will serve as the district's new social studies coordinator beginning the 2013-2014 school year.

Lexington-Richland Five has tapped award-winning teacher Melony Sanford as its new Social Studies Coordinator.
Sandford will replace Kathy Hogan, who is retiring after 24 years with District Five.
Sanford said, “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Lexington Richland District Five as the new Social Studies Coordinator. With this new position, I look forward to working closely with teachers to help students become global citizens in the 21st century.”

Sanford is currently a social studies teacher at Columbia High School, where she has worked since 2002. She has earned numerous awards and recognitions during her career, including: 2006 – 2007 Columbia High School Teacher of the Year and the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies Secondary Outstanding Social Studies Teacher award in 2007.
She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree in Education from Columbia College.

As District Five's Social Studies Coordinator, Sanford will provide professional leadership, consultation and support to District Five social studies teachers. She will also review and make recommendations for changes as appropriate in district policies and procedures related to the social studies education program.
Dr. Christina Melton, District Five’s incoming Chief Instructional Officer, said: “Ms. Sanford will be a great addition to our instructional team. Her exceptional experiences and knowledge of social studies instruction will assist our teachers so that we can continue to reach the needs of our students.”
