Winners of Lexington-Richland School District Five’s recent "Chopped" contest have added a new title – Regional Chopped Champions.
The team from Irmo High School, which includes Estelle Goodson, Allison Stokes and Tina Gray, prepared turkey tortilla wrap with sautéed peaches and collard greens to beat two Aiken teams during a cooking competition at this year’s Summer Institute for Food Service Training on June 13. They will compete for the state title in October.
“Our student nutrition professionals have once again proven that they are highly skilled, creative and among the best at what they do,” said District Five Student Nutrition Director Todd Bedenbaugh. “Congratulations to our team from Irmo High School. They represented their school and our district well, and we look forward to their continued success!”
District Five held its Chopped competition on May 14 at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies as a way to highlight the work and skill of its cafeteria workers. Five teams of three prepared breakfast and lunch using pantry items and five mystery ingredients donated by local sponsors. The Irmo High School team prepared a meal of South Carolina grown collards, mangos, red peppers and whole grain pasta to earn the District Five Chopped Champion designation last month.
