District 5 Exceeds State and National SAT Scores, Highest in Midlands

Chapin, Dutch Fork and Irmo high schools in top 10 in the Midlands

Lexington-Richland 5 composite SAT score of 1,528 was 92 points higher than the state’s average of 1,436 and 28 points higher than the nation’s average of 1,500, according to data released Tuesday by the state Department of Education.

The district’s score was three points down from last year. The mean scores for critical reading, math and writing for the district was 509, 533 and 486, respectively.

Eighty-two percent of the 1,121 seniors in the class of 2011 took the SAT, a standardized test used for college admissions.

District 5’s three high schools are among the top 10 in the Midlands for students graduating in 2011.

Chapin High School’s average composite score was 1,580, making it the highest score of any Midlands’ high schools. Dutch Fork and schools also had high average composite scores. Dutch Fork’s composite score was 1,544 and Irmo’s score was 1,475, making the schools’ scores the third and seventh highest scores, respectively, in the Midlands.

Compared to last year’s senior test-takers, Chapin High’s composite score was 1,585, a difference of five points. Dutch Fork’s 2010 composite score was 1,568, down 24 points. Irmo High’s score was up 17 points from its 2010 score of 1,458.

The state’s graduating senior test-takers’ average composite score of 1,436 was down seven points from the previous year, while the national average dropped six points to 1500.
