District 5 Names Teacher of the Year, Support Employee of the Year
The two employees were recognized at a ceremony on May 23.
Lexington-Richland School District Five has a new Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year.
Biomedical Sciences teacher Julie Krusen, from the Center for Advanced Technical Studies (The Center), was named District Five’s 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year during an Employee Recognition Ceremony on May 23. Kim Cash, a social worker at the Alternative Academy for Success, was named Support Employee of the Year.
“Julie Krusen and Kim Cash represent the best of the best in our district," said District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner. "We congratulate them and thank them for the service they provide to our students and all they do to make District Five successful.”

A National Board Certified teacher with 12 years of experience as an educator, Krusen was the first teacher of the year for The Center, which opened in August 2012. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina.
“It’s an honor to be named Teacher of the Year for District Five, to represent the many wonderful educators we have in our district, and to make my students proud," Krusen said. "For me, this award is all about my students. As a teacher I try each school day to challenge them, while showing I am dedicated to their success.”

Cash has a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina. She is a licensed master social worker and has served as a consultant for the Department of Social Services.
“It’s a huge honor to be named Support Employee of the Year for District Five," Cash said. "This award is really a reflection of the strong team we have at our school and in the district. I can’t do my job without the work of others. We all work together to ensure our students have the tools they need to be the best learners they can be.”
