District 5 Schools Send Holiday Greetings to Members of Armed Forces

Nine elementary, middle and high schools participated in the effort that's part of the American Red Cross "Holiday Mail for Heroes" program, which is sponsored by Pitney Bowes.

Nine schools in Lexington-Richland Five have joined together to create and send more than 1,000 holiday cards to serving military members.

This effort was part of the American Red Cross “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program, which is sponsored by Pitney Bowes. From 2006 through 2011, more than 4 million holiday cards for members of the Armed Forces have been delivered.

The following schools participated in the program: Ballentine Elementary, Chapin Elementary, H. E. Corley Elementary, Irmo Elementary, Lake Murray Elementary, Oak Pointe Elementary, Chapin Middle, Irmo Middle and Irmo High.

Mark Bounds, the district's public information officer and a retired Army officer, said, “I took time to read through many of the cards and was amazed by the sentiments expressed by our students.  I know that our service members will be blessed by these cards.”

For service members that find themselves far from their homes during the holidays, these cards bring a special sense of connection and peace.  The project also helps students understand the sacrifices our military makes and the importance of service to others.
