District 5 Seeks $10 Million from Former School Board Member

The district is asking for $10 million from Kim Murphy, who was removed from the board in March.

Lexington-Richland School District Five officials are asking for $10 million from ousted school board member Kim Murphy, according to a report.

District officials say Murphy should pay that amount because her unsuccessful legal challenge to renovations at Chapin High caused the cost of the project to increase that much, according to The State. They also say Murphy acted in support of her own interests.

The request for the $10 million is a counter-claim to Murphy's attempt to obtain a court order to restore her seat on the seven-member school board.

The board voted 6-1 to remove Murphy from the seat during a special meeting on March 19 after state officials determined her Old Laurel Lane home in Chapin, which she believed to be in Richland County, was located in Lexington County.
