UPDATED: Dutch Fork Middle Employee Charged with Having Sex with Student, 13

A female cafeteria worker at Dutch Fork Middle School is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old male student at her home, according to the Columbia Police Department. 

Lawanda Ann Cummings, 42, was arrested Monday night and charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor. 

Cummings has been placed on paid administrative leave, said Mark Bounds, public information officer for Lexington-Richland 5.

Police say the incident happened last year at Cummings' apartment at the former Columbiana Ridge, now called Harbison Gardens on Columbiana Drive.

Bounds said Cummings and the student were acquainted through off-school activities.

"There is no indication that any inappropriate activities occurred on school property, when Ms. Cummings was on duty or when the student was under the school's care," Bounds said.

School officials became aware of the allegation when the student told a guidance counselor.  

"Obviously, we are heartbroken for the victim. It is tragic when the innocence of any child is taken away," Bounds said. "We will ensure the student receives any necessary counseling and support."

Cummings is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
