Dutch Fork Teacher Cadet Earns Prestigious Scholarship

The Ken Bower Teacher Cadet Scholarship is an award for students who intend to teach in one of the state's public schools.

Submitted by Lexington-Richland District Five.

A Lexington-Richland School District Five student has received the Ken Bower Teacher Cadet Scholarship, a top award for students statewide who intend to become classroom teachers in one of South Carolina’s public schools.

Dutch Fork High School’s Elizabeth Anne Rogers is one of only six Teacher Cadets in South Carolina to receive the honor. In addition to being in the school’s Teacher Cadet Program, the 2013 Dutch Fork High graduate also was a member of the BETA Club, National Honor Society, Silver Spirit Marching Band and Honors Chamber Choir. She will attend the University of South Carolina in the fall.

“I was honored to be a recipient of the Ken Bower Teacher Cadet Scholarship,” Rogers said. “It means a lot to me and is helping a great deal by making it possible for me to continue my education and achieve my dream of becoming a teacher.”

The one-time $500 scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Ken Bower, an architect of the original Teacher Cadet course and curriculum. The awards are based on “the merits of scholarship, teacher recommendations, and a written essay,” according to a media release by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA), which recently announced this year’s scholarship winners.

“The recipients of the Ken Bower Teacher Cadet Scholarship are among South Carolina’s most stellar students,” said Marcella Wine-Snyder, Program Director for the Teacher Cadet Program. “Not only do they have a passion for making a difference in the lives of children, but they also exhibit the talent for teaching and working with them. I am consistently amazed by the skills and talents of Teacher Cadets across our state, and I look forward to welcoming these exceptional students to the teaching profession.”
