Former District 5 Chief Awarded Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Herbert Berg has been a leader in public education for 40 years.

Dr. Herbert Berg, former superintendent of Lexington-Richland 5, was recently awarded the 2013 Distinguished Service Award by the American Association of School Administrators.
Berg has been a leader in public education for 40 years. He was superintendent of schools for 35 years, serving in six districts in Washington, Virginia and South Carolina. He last served as District 5's superintendent from August 2008 to December 2011.
In addition to his distinguished career as a school superintendent, Berg served as the executive director of the Association for the Advancement of International Education and served the U.S. Department of State/Office of Overseas Schools, School to School Partnership in China.

He was twice named to the Top 100 North American Executive Educators list by Executive Educators Magazine, was the Superintendent of the Year for Washington state and was also named a National Tech Savvy Superintendent by eSchool News.
Berg was one of three education officials to receive this honor in February during the association’s National Conference on Education in Los Angeles.

“This award is a demonstration of the legacy and work that Dr. Berg accomplished while at District 5 and over his 40-year career in public education,” Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said. “We congratulate Dr. Berg for this prestigious award, one that is well deserved.”
