Four District 5 Seniors Named Semifinalists in National Achievement Competition

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes promising black students, is part of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Four Lexington-Richland 5 seniors have been named semi-finalists in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship competition.

Irmo High School students Ezinee A. Ogbonna and Jeremiah M. Prince, and Dutch Fork High School students Brenton G. Davis and Lauren M. Woods are among about 1,600 black American seniors from across the country who will be able to continue in the competition for scholarships.

In January, about 1,300 semifinalists will be notified if they qualify as finalists.

Winners are chosen from the pool of finalists. Achievement scholar recipients are selected based on their abilities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The students are competing for one of about 800 Achievement Scholarships worth more than $2.5 million.

There are two types of Achievement Scholarship awards are offered: the National Achievement $2,500 Scholarships or the corporate-sponsored scholarships.

A total of 700 National Achievement $2,500 Scholarships are awarded.

About 100 winners can receive corporate-sponsored Achievement Scholarships, which are renewable or four years of undergraduate study or one-time awards.
