Friends Plan Outing for Chapin Man Sentenced in Federal Sports Bookie Case

Lanny Ray Gunter II, 42, of Chapin, was sentenced to five months in prison for his role in an illegal Columbia-area gambling operation.

The friends of a Midlands sports bookie sentenced to five months in prison for operating an illegal gambling operation are hosting a golfing event in his honor.

He was also sentenced to five months of home confinement and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. 

Gunter was one of three men sentenced in the federal case.

Harry Bruce Benenhaley, 66, of Columbia, and 61-year-old Ronald Dale Spence of Irmo, were both sentenced to five years probation, including six months of home confinement. They are both ordered to pay $2,000 in fines.

Authorities said Gunter supervised the business, provided financing, and directed the web operation.

The federal investigation into the three's involvement with gambling has ties to the alleged sports bookie operation ran by Irmo resident Brett Parker.
