Youmans was selected for the honor because she is an outstanding 11th grade student in Irmo High's Junior ROTC program and was an officer at the Cadet Officer Leadership School of South Carolina this past summer, school officials said.

Youmans is a member of Irmo's JROTC drill team and taught herself the Singaporean British style marching discipline she uses to command the trophy winning  “unarmed fancy” drill squad during varsity competition drill meets.

She is an active participant in a variety of charitable causes through JROTC, and her church and family.

Youmans is the daughter of Janie and Melvin Youmans.

Contributions supporting Youmans' travel expenses are welcome as there is no government funding for this effort.

Donations can be mailed to the Cadet Officer Leadership School, P.O. Box 566, Irmo, SC 29063 or Irmo High School's AFJROTC, 6671 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212.
